The land
Twenty-three acres, and a national park for a fence line
The meadow is the reason for the house. It runs west from the trees toward Highway 101 and the open Pacific, and it is held on its other three sides by Redwood National and State Parks.
Twenty-three acres of open meadow, bounded by redwood park on three sides.

Water
Two streams and a spring of its own
Two seasonal streams cut across the property. In the wet months they run hard enough to hear from the porch; by late summer they narrow to a trickle and a line of greener grass. They are the reason the meadow stays as good as it does.
The house draws from a spring on the land. Water out here comes from the ground beneath your feet rather than a pipeline over the hill.
Orchard
A young orchard, just coming into its own
The orchard is new and in its second year of fruiting: pears, apples, cherries, grapes and five different kinds of berries. Depending on the month there may be something ready to pick, and guests are welcome to help themselves to whatever is ripe — it is better eaten than left for the deer, who will otherwise take the lot.
Blossom in spring is worth planning a trip around.
Wildlife
The elk in Sea Elk Ranch
Roosevelt elk — the largest elk in North America — live in this corner of the coast and move between the park and the open ground. They come up out of the trees at first light and graze the meadow, and the sensible thing is to watch them from the porch with a coffee and keep your distance.
Overhead there are hawks and the occasional bald eagle. Offshore, grey whales pass on migration, and the meadow's elevation above the highway makes a decent vantage point for them.
Wildlife is wild. Please keep well back from the elk, especially in the autumn rut and when calves are about.
Through the year
What the seasons do here
Spring
Orchard blossom, the streams at full voice, green meadow and long light. Wildflowers through the grass and the parks at their best before the summer traffic arrives.
Summer
Cool for California — this is a coast of fog mornings and bright afternoons, not of heat. The redwood trails are comfortable all day and the evenings on the porch are the long ones.
Autumn
The clearest skies of the year and the quietest trails. The elk rut is on, which is spectacular from a safe distance and loud at dawn.
Winter
Big weather off the Pacific, the streams running hard, and storms worth watching from the sunroom. Grey whales pass offshore on migration.
